Cartografia, progresso e turismo: apontamentos Sobre o "Mappa excursionista de Portugal" de 1907

Abstract

The "Mappa excursionista de Portugal" (Excursionist Map of Portugal) published by the Society Propaganda of Portugal, in 1907, represents the basis of debate pro-moted thru this text. It is intended, essentially, cross lines of knowledge between cartography and tourism in particular since they are integral components of the development process as is promoted by the elites in century transition. This first decade of the twentieth century saw therefore be consolidated in Por-tugal a new interest in travel and the access to cartographic documents of wide distribution, as the map of Portuguese Cycling Union or Portuguese Map to the automobile. The Excursionist Map of Portugal thus emerges with similar characteristics to other thematic maps with a base that is anchored in the Carta Geographica of Por-tugal published in 1865, supports the importance of knowing the country and landscapes of the country very particular localities, beaches and spa which compri-sed the list proposed by the SPP at the beginning of the century.
