Abstract

This research work arises from the opportunity to make a project for a house, however, several problems emerged by analysing the territory. In order to understand the consequences of an intervention in a mischaracterized place, the study of Portuguese architecture began, focused on the rural and popular elements. Some more critical moments of architecture in Portugal are presented, such as the Movement of the Portuguese House, or the Survey of Popular Portuguese Architecture, but also themes such as the emigrant's house, developing a stronger knowledge about the evolution of non-erudite architecture, "architecture without architects". As a way to develop solutions to the act of intervening on devalued buildings, or in mischaracterized territory, the study moves to a practical component. Using an existing house, which will serve as a case study to experiment, some conceptual proposals are presented, as a direct response to the international intervention theories studied. Finally, a proposal is developed, which reflects the intention of approaching the required balance in a fragile atmosphere, as is one that is experienced in many places.
