Sexual satisfaction is crucial both in personal fulfilment and in the intimate relationship between individuals. The non-taboo approach to this theme, although recent, allowed the deconstruction of some ideas and myths about what effectively influences sexual pleasure and, consequently, the achievement of orgasm. This review aims to expose the scientific evidence on how sexual satisfaction varies between men and women, considering two different ways to achieve it: through pornography/masturbation or through couple sex. A search was made, in the PUBMED database, for articles that address sexual satisfaction overall and compare it in the two different contexts mentioned above (pornography/masturbation versus sexual intercourse), which led to the thirty studies reviewed. This dissertation concludes and defends that both masturbation and sexual intercourse are associated with the achievement of sexual satisfaction in both sexes, pointing out that the great majority of women attribute greater orgasmic pleasure to couple sex then to masturbation. Some positive predictive factors (such as good self-esteem and good communication between the couple) and negative predictive factors (such as anxiety/stress) of sexual satisfaction are also highlighted.
