| Title: | The role of the anesthesiologist through patient's eyes - a prospective study |

| Abstract: | Background: The role of the anesthesiologist remains uncertain, and many patients still do not recognize the functions of the anesthesiologist. There are still several concerns about anesthesia. The main objectives of this study were to assess the perception of the role of the anesthesiologist and to understand the main concerns regarding the anesthetic procedure. Methods: Prospective study carried out for 2 months in patients before the pre-anesthetic consultation. A questionnaire with 15 questions about demographic data, previous anesthesia, functions of the anesthesiologist, main concerns of patients and knowledge about general and regional anesthesia was delivered. The questions were assessed as correct (one point) or incorrect / do not know / do not answer (0 points). The analysis was performed with SPSS 21, with p <0.20 considered statistically significant. Results: 259 patients were included. 71,8% consider the anesthesiologist to be a specialized physician. The task most recognized by patients was to "put patients to sleep" before surgery and assess the patient before surgery. 24,7% consider the anesthesiologist the most competent member to treat complications such as severe allergic reactions, among others. 59,8% are not afraid of being anesthetized and 80,3% consider anesthesia a safe procedure. The main concern is not waking up after surgery. The difference between the number of correct answers is statistically significant in patients with different levels of education. Conclusions: The role of the anesthesiologist remains underestimated, and patients' knowledge has evolved little over the years. Patients with higher academic levels and previous anesthetic experiences have a better knowledge about anesthetic procedures. |
| Description: | Justificativa/objetivos: O papel do anestesiologista permanece incerto, sendo que muitos pacientes ainda não reconhecem as funções do anestesiologista. Existem ainda vários receios relativamente à anestesia. Os principais objetivos deste estudo foram avaliar a perceção do papel do anestesiologista e compreender as principais preocupações relativamente ao procedimento anestésico. Métodos: Estudo prospetivo decorrido durante 2 meses em doentes antes da consulta pré-anestésica. Foi entregue um questionário com 15 perguntas sobre dados demográficos, procedimentos anestésicos prévios, funções do anestesiologista, preocupações dos pacientes e conhecimentos sobre anestesia geral e regional. As questões foram avaliadas como corretas (um ponto) ou incorretas/não sabe/não responde (0 pontos). A análise foi realizada com SPSS 21, com p<0,20 considerado estatisticamente significativo. Resultados: Foram incluídos 259 pacientes, 71,8% considerou o anestesiologista um médico especialista. A tarefa mais reconhecida pelos doentes foi "adormecer" os doentes antes da cirurgia e avaliar o doente antes da cirurgia. 24,7% dos pacientes considera o anestesiologista como o elemento mais competente da equipa para tratar complicações como paragem cardiorrespiratória, reações alérgicas graves, entre outras. Relativamente à anestesia, 59,8% não tem medo de ser anestesiado e 80,3% considera a anestesia um procedimento seguro, sendo a principal preocupação dos doentes não acordar após a cirurgia. A diferença entre o número de respostas certas é estatisticamente significativa nos pacientes com diferentes níveis de escolaridade. Conclusões: O papel do anestesiologista continua a ser subestimado e o conhecimento dos doentes pouco evoluiu ao longo dos anos. Pacientes com níveis académicos superiores e experiências anestésicas anteriores têm um melhor conhecimento acerca dos procedimentos anestésicos. |
