Title: Viroses e Esquizofrenia: o possível impacto da COVID-19
Issue Date: 2021-05-11
Abstract: Abstract Introduction: Schizophrenia is a clinically heterogeneous and complex pathology, affecting about 1% of the world population. Its origin remains unknown, although it has been studied since the end of the 19th century. Methods: The Medline database (PubMed) was used to search for the articles, and 57 papers were selected in English with relevant information about schizophrenia, influenza infections and the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Results and Discussion: One of the conceptual frameworks that best explains schizophrenia is based on the theory of neurodevelopment. It proposes that genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the etiology of the disease, namely maternal and fetal exposure to various factors during prenatal life. Since 1918 Influenza pandemic, this virus, along with other virus and some bacteria and parasites, has been studied as a disrupting factor in brain development during fetal life. Thus, as it interferes with the neurodevelopment, maternal infection has been implicated to the increasing risk of schizophrenia in the offspring. Conclusion: In March 2020, WHO declared SARS-CoV-2 a worldwide pandemic and, since then, many studies have been made to understand the effects of this virus on the body and the associated complications. Assuming that maternal infections affect the mental health of children, and using the effects of the Spanish and Asian flu pandemics as an example, it may be possible to project the neuropsychiatric effects of COVID-19 on the offspring of infected mothers during pregnancy.
