| Title: | Gut microbiota and Age-related Macular Degeneration: a systematic review |

| Abstract: | Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of severe, irreversible vision impairment in developed countries and its prevalence is rising all over the world, increasing sharply with age. AMD represents an acquired degeneration of the retina that causes significant central visual impairment through a combination of non-neovascular and neovascular derangement. The main risk factors for the development of advanced AMD are increasing age, genetic factors, and cigarette smoking. However, the exact pathophysiology of AMD is yet relatively poorly understood. In the last years, the gut microbiota has been intensively studied and linked to several pathologic processes, including ocular diseases. In this sense, the aim of this review is to gather published evidence about the relationship between gut microbiota and AMD. |
| Description: | A degenerescência macular da idade (DMI) é uma das principais causas de deterioração grave e irreversível da visão nos países desenvolvidos e a sua prevalência está a crescer em todo o mundo, aumentando acentuadamente com a idade. A DMI representa uma degeneração adquirida da retina que causa um défice visual central significativo como resultado de uma combinação de alterações não neovasculares e neovasculares. Os principais fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento da DMI avançada são o envelhecimento, fatores genéticos e o tabagismo. Contudo, a patofisiologia exata da DMI é ainda relativamente pouco compreendida. Nos últimos anos, a microbiota intestinal tem sido intensamente estudada e relacionada com vários processos patológicos, incluindo as doenças oculares. Neste sentido, o objetivo desta revisão é reunir os estudos publicados sobre a relação entre a microbiota intestinal e a DMI. |
