Abstract

The dissertation The facade as a Projectual Constraint: Reabilitation of a Structure in the City Centre of Espinho consists in developing an intervention plan on a 20th century building in the centre of Espinho. The aim of the whole process is to address a real client's request to develop a house for his old age and take into consideration all the inherent constraints. Despite the degradation of the object of study, the client also requests the possibility of maintaing the facade facing East to continue his long-­lasting connection with the building and honor its history which we will describe throughout this dissertation. This request became our foundation and starting point. We tried to understand in what way it would make sense to maintain this isolated element and use it as the beginning of the whole project and find the best solution to combine a new architectural language with the pre-­existing one without falling into facadisms or forged imitations.
