| Abstract: | The object of study of this dissertation is the Building 54/56, Rua de Olivença, in Porto, by the duo Arménio Losa and Cassiano Barbosa, at the request of Custódio Ferreira Lino. Its purpose was to build a mixeduse building: multi-family housing (apartments and income studios); storage, display and marketing of lamps produced at the customer's factory on the same street. Held between 1951 and 1953, it was inhabited until 2013 and is now in the perspective of requalification and future (re) housing. The architectural heritage value of this building is unequivocal, due to its experimental character both morphologically (in the optimization of spaces) and constructively (through structural rationalization and application of new constructive systems). Due to the opportunity to collaborate on the Lino Building intervention and rehabilitation project, with the office responsible for its restoration, this dissertation will focus on the exploration and problematization of the main themes of this project. It is intended the study and documentation of this building, from the perspective of testing an intervention methodology achieved in a learning process, between the conclusion of the course and anticipation of professional activity. "Olivença" allows the construction of an exhibition space and discussion of a building, although modest, complete in terms of the expression of architectural and constructive principles of its time; where some concerns arise about the role and functions of the architect, the need to face architecture and urbanism in an integrated manner, as well as a relevant turning point in design practices, discussing new programs and languages. Because it is a poorly studied work, it becomes necessary not only in-depth reading of the graphic and written material of the project, but especially of the constructed one, in order to assemble a project circumstance. The Lino Building thus appears as an opportunity to discuss intervention strategies in modern buildings; It also allows to explore important themes that characterize the multi-family housing work by Arménio Losa and Cassiano Barbosa, two of the most influential modern architects of his generation. |
| Description: | O objecto de estudo da presente dissertação trata-se do Edifício n.º 54/56 da Rua de Olivença, no Porto, da autoria da dupla Arménio Losa e Cassiano Barbosa, a pedido de Custódio Ferreira Lino. Para simplificar a leitura, denominamos esta obra Edifício Lino, devido à sua grande associação com a fábrica de Candeeiros Lino. A sua edificação teve como propósito a construção de um edifício de uso misto: habitação plurifamiliar (apartamentos e estúdios de rendimento); armazenamento, exposição e comercialização de candeeiros produzidos na fábrica do cliente, na mesma rua. Realizado entre os anos 1951 e 1953, foi habitado até 2013 encontrando-se agora em perspectiva de requalificação e de futura (re)habitação. O valor patrimonial arquitectónico deste edifício é inequívoco, devido ao seu carácter experimental tanto morfologicamente (na optimização dos espaços) como construtivamente (através da racionalização estrutural e aplicação de novos sistemas construtivos). Devido à oportunidade de colaboração no projecto de intervenção e de reabilitação do Edifício Lino, com o escritório responsável pelo seu restauro, a presente dissertação focar-se-á na exploração e problematização dos principais temas deste projecto. Pretende-se o estudo documentoe documentação deste edifício, na perspectiva de ensaio de uma metodologia de intervenção conseguida num processo de aprendizagem, compreendido entre a conclusão de curso e antecipação da actividade profissional. "Olivença" permite a construção de um espaço de exposição e discussão de um edifício, apesar de modesto, completo no que toca à expressão de princípios arquitectónicos e construtivos da sua época; onde surgem algumas preocupações relativas ao papel e funções do arquitecto, à necessidade de encarar a arquitectura e urbanismo de forma integrada, assim como uma viragem relevante nas práticas de projecto, discutindo-se novos programas e linguagens. Por se tratar de uma obra pouco estudada, tornam-se necessárias não só leituras aprofundadas do material gráfico e escrito do projecto, mas sobretudo do construído, tendo em vista a montagem de uma circunstância de projecto. O Edifício Lino surge, assim, como oportunidade de problematizar estratégias de intervenção em edifícios do moderno; assim como permite explorar temáticas importantes e caracterizantes da obra de habitação plurifamiliar de Arménio Losa e Cassiano Barbosa, dois dos arquitectos modernos mais influentes da sua geração. |
