Athletes from various sports involving throwing motions, such as volleyball and handball, have come to increase in number in the last few decades in Portugal. As such, the incidence of pathologies relating, in particular, to the anatomical region of the shoulder has increased alongside it. From the different pathologies that make up this group, this thesis focuses on the long head of the biceps brachii pathology. In it, the different pathological entities belonging to this category with more relevance to active athletes are extended upon, in a detailed enough fashion so as to provide all the relevant scientific and clinical information, in order to enable the correct approach, identification and follow-up of such entities. The sub-chapters pertaining to the aforementioned pathologies are divided in several parts, presenting a theoretical introduction to the pathology in question; their possible presentation, with typical signs and symptoms; specific maneuvers to be executed upon the physical examination, including suitable tests to provide assistance to the diagnostic process; relevant auxiliary diagnostic tests for each of the pathologies, in accordance to the most up-to-date guidelines; and various treatment option, medical and/or surgical, as applicable, with associated prognosis.
