dc.description	Os Bancos de Leite Humano são serviços estabelecidos com o objectivo de colher, avaliar, processar e distribuir o leite humano doado, sendo os recém-nascidos de pré-termo e/ou de muito baixo peso os seus principais destinatários. O leite humano doado, quando comparado com fórmulas infantis parece conduzir a um crescimento a curto prazo menos acentuado mas confere numerosas vantagens, das quais se destaca o tratamento e prevenção da enterocolite necrosante. O conceito dos Bancos de Leite Humano não é novo e a sua distribuição geográfica é bastante heterogénea, podendo verificar-se algumas diferenças entre as práticas de vários países. No entanto, estas práticas revelam-se suficientemente seguras para se poder afirmar que a melhor opção para alimentar o recém-nascido quando o leite da própria mãe não está disponível é o leite proveniente destas instituições.
dc.description.abstract	Human milk banks are services established for the purpose of collecting, screening, processing and distributing donated human milk, having the preterm and low birth weight infants as the main recipients. Donor human milk, when compared with infant formula, may lead to slower growth in the short-term growth but it offers many advantages including the treatment and prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis. Milk banking is not a new concept and the geographical distribution of human milk banks is quite heterogeneous, as well as the countries' practices. Though, these practices seem to be safe enough to affirm that the best option to the infant feeding, when the mother's own milk is not available, is the milk from these institutions.
