Title: Three-dimensional laminar flow in square/square contractions

Abstract: The Newtonian fluid flow through square/square sudden contractions, withcontraction ratios of 2.4:1, 4:1 and 8:1, was investigated both experimental and numerically.Flow visualisations and detailed velocity field measurements using Particle ImageVelocimetry (PIV) were undertaken at low Reynolds numbers (Re 30). The experimentalresults are also compared to computation obtained using a finite-volume numerical method.In both approaches, the results show a reduction of the size and strength of the corner vortexwith the increase of the flow inertia and revealed a helicoidal flow within the vorticalstructure.
