A capela da Nossa Senhora da Conceição em Tomar.

Abstract

This work is about the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição at Tomar. It is made from an architectural point of view. Until now, most of the studies about this Chapel had been using non rigorous plans. In this work a new plan of the building will be presented, one executed purposely for this dissertation. It contains an introductory part, where an architectural critic of the Chapel is made and some historical issues are developed: the authorship, the architectural sources and the purpose. Following the presentation of the execution of the plan and the discussion of the old standards of measure, a more detailed analysis of the ornament of the Chapel is written. After this, two important themes characteristics of this building will be presented: the light and texture, and the interior's optical effects. It will also be exposed a series of findings in the proportional relationship of the Chapel. Then it will be made several comparisons between some parts of Vitruvius's text and from the interpretation of Vitruvius's man made by Caesare Caesariano. In the end it will be written some parallels between the Chapel and some parts of Convento de Cristo at Tomar and the Church of Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Belém.
