Banhistas de mar no século XIX : um olhar sobre uma época

Abstract

With some information from the romantic period, the A. tries reconstruct a few aspects of the occupation of the North-western coastline of Portugal. Since the middle of the nineteenth century the area is habited, principally between the months of August and October, by bathers who (between 1850 and 1880) accelerated its rapid development. That development is justified by the nearness of Porto; this is one of the most important aspects which explains the splendour of the beaches in this period.
