Ruínas Industriais nos Centros Urbanos - Plano de Requalificação para o Sítio da Antiga Fábrica "A Madrugada"

Abstract

Today the stagnation of massive construction of the previous decades and the deindustrialization in our cities highlighted problems that inhabit in the urban grid and new architectural realities. The theme chosen for the master's thesis, in this final phase, comes as a opportunity to reflect on two concepts of the discipline of architecture framework: the Urban Renewal and the Rehabilitation of buildings in ruin. The term Requalification emerges as an essential condition of the contemporary cities management, encompassing the concepts of Renewal, Restructuring and Rehabilitation of urban areas. It is interceded to highlight a problem present in the current reality: Industrial ruins. These are elements of city degradation, usually large and, for that reason, they contaminate the urban scale and determine therefore the behavior of the population. In this work a detailed study of the subject is considered essential, in order to highlight the problems and the negative effects, but also to recognize their own value and to protect these architectural elements and the opportunities related to their interventions and transformation. The choice of a case study, the factory Madrugada, in Póvoa de Varzim, aims to achieve a possible strategy, which sets properly the critical issues locked to these interventions, contributing to the preservation of local identity and positively changing the urban environment of the surrounding area.
