Abstract

The dissertation proof presented here, part of the Architecture Master's Degree program, consists in creating a conversion and adaptation project of an old factory ruin, set in a historical context and river front, in Santa Marinha, Vila Nova de Gaia. From the survey, analysis and interpretation of the pre-existence, we try to find an answer in the form of project, capable of bringing it into a new time and place. The preservation and reconversion of the ruin and its adaptation to a new program and today requirements is one of the concerns of the project exercise. The proposed project, a Local Accommodation Unit, presents itself then as an object of study of this thesis, from which it opens the discussion on issues related to the very concept of the project and its reflection on the built environment. The work is then organized in two parts. The first part questions the pertinence of the reconversion and rehabilitation of industrial structures when adapted to a new program, through the construction of a historical narrative that provides a factual overview based on the issues and challenges facing the contemporary city in general and in contexts of intervention in pre-existing buildings in particular. The other part is dedicated to the themes of the project, which was considered relevant taking in account the issues and characteristics of the place, the intervention in pre-existing building and river front, the proposed method, and the importance of design as an instrument of analysis and thinking.
