Abstract

The search for specific features of an Irish cultural and literary identity takes an important step forward in Austin Clarke's «The Young Woman of Beare»: this can be seen in the rewriting of a põem from the Gaelic tradition, in its relocation in the historie time chosen by Ciarke for the enhanced portrayal of confliets central to the Irish consciousness, and in the expression of a committed and libertarian attitude towards Ireland and towards the body.
