A tipologia da Bretanha na tradição de casa popular Micaelense. A importância do lugar na construção da identidade

Abstract

The place is the main responsible for most of the habitat phemomena. Based on this idea, the current thesis studies the place - São Miguel island - to better understand its people and its architecture. Popular architecture, the focus of this study, is the crudest representation of the people's identity while it reflects the specificities of the place. The traditional popular azorean house appears in the insular scene as a part of its landscape and does not limit itself to a merely iconic function in the island's rural scene. It's also a carrier of an expressive identity of its own that this study means to emphasize. The tradition, which is not limited to a time interval and is still present in contemporary spaces, is the work's guide, once it's through it that the systematization of a kind of azorean house is made possible, considering the variety of dwelling forms present in the island. The house of Bretanha does not cease to be a reflection of a popular tradition but moves away from the São Miguel house standard by its form, use of space and deployment strategies in the place. The typology of Bretanha is considered to be an exception of São Miguel's architecture for its original form and for the dialogue it makes with the territory and the sea, in which it will find the answers to its cause and origin.
