Abstract

Sobre a Singularidade Do Lugar it´s a study that has the landscape and the surroundings as the primary interest. This subject is frequently study in architecture and is considered an essential matter. However, in this thesis, the focus will be only in places where the landscape is so exceptional - incontrollable, extraordinary, impossible, and unpredictable -, that promotes the production of architectural projects completely linked and dependent to the surroundings. Environments, places and landscapes whose characteristics have a direct influence on architecture, on Men, and in his way of living. This study is not only formal and a constructive analysis, but also an experiential one. The ambition is to show how the circumstances surrounding architecture - the restrictions, limitations and qualities of places - promote opportunities for architects to achieve higher and search for exceptional solutions. In this work the interest is on the process of architectural creation, searching to understand questions raised in the encounter between landscape and architecture. This thesis sinks to comprehend what are the matters and conditions imposed by the surroundings to architecture, and how architects respond to the circumstances around them. The study cases that were selected for this work underline the interaction between architecture and landscape, and also empathized the influence on the final project solution that the character of the landscape has. There could be other projects selected, in different environments and made by different authors. However, this thesis was directed to the analysis of singular and exceptional landscapes that determine and affect clearly the options of architects. The intense dialog that is created between this kind of excisional places and architecture leaves marks on this projects that are easily spotted. And also provides the right environment to produce new, exclusive and surprising architecture solutions. This solutions promote many distinctive conclusions that amplify the real dimension of the process that involves architecture creation. In this thesis we focus on the study of cases that are completely dependent and related to the surroundings. This work only examines projects whose elements, decisions and solutions are fully and intimately connected to the context. This architectural cases reflect the surroundings, but they don't mirror it. They immerge in the landscape, in an intense dialog with the qualities and conditions that define the context; but this projects never hide behind the circumstances or abandon their architecture identity. The projects selected for this study show the will of architecture to become a part of the landscape, to mark the place, and are linked permanently to the surroundings. This work reveals the intention of studying the process of creation, analysis and integration that architects make in every architectural project. To reach the comprehension of this we define guide lines and questions to interpret the projects. And limited the spectrum of study to six cases that reveal more clearly the relation between architecture creation process and the influence of the projects surrounding circumstances in final architectural solution.
