| Abstract: | The city's forms are defined by the set of relationships built between the place and its inhabitants. These relationships acquire meaning over time as references and values, and become part of the collective, social, and urban heritage. The discomfort felt in São Paulo arises from the perception of a context in which the construction of the city is far from a shared and coherent system, often detatched from its specific historical and spatial definitions. The motivation for this work came from the desire to study contemporary architectural practices on existing buildings, which seem unusual within the current status quo of the city: demolition and new construction. The latest interventions on the headquarters of Correiros e Telégrafos de São Paulo (São Paulo's Posts and Telegraphs), Mário de Andrade Library and Casa da Imagem reflect a new position on the architectural practice and its relationship with the city. These three projects diverge from the general line of action, as part of the production of some architecture offices whose work has been capable of creating qualified space. By analyzing these three case studies in a structured way, this work aims to understand how, and if, the values identified by the architects on the existing buildings were integrated in the new proposals. Beyond the drawings, it was intended to understand the projects' stages of implementation and the challenges faced by the various stakeholders. From this standpoint, it was attempted to consider how the socio-political context interfered with each process of development. |
| Description: | As formas da cidade definem-se pelo conjunto de relações construídas entre os seus habitantes e o lugar. Ao longo do tempo estas relações ganham significados, enquanto referências e valores, que se tornam parte do património colectivo social e urbano. O desconforto sentido em São Paulo surge da percepção de um contexto em que a realização de cidade se distancia do sentido de conjunto coerente comum, muitas vezes afastado das suas especificidades históricas e espaciais. A motivação para este trabalho partiu da vontade de estudar práticas arquitectónicas contemporâneas de referência, sobre edificado existente, algo que parece invulgar dentro do ritmo actual na cidade, de demolições e novas construções. A sede dos Correios e Telégrafos de São Paulo, a Biblioteca Mário de Andrade e a Casa da Imagem, são edifícios sobre os quais as últimas intervenções realizadas reflectem uma nova posição relativamente às práticas de arquitectura e à relação com a cidade. Estes três projectos destacam-se da linha geral de actuação, como parte da produção de um conjunto de escritórios de arquitectura que, tentando contrariá- la, vem realizando propostas capazes de criar espaço qualificado. Procurou-se analisar os casos de forma estruturada e compreender de que modo, os valores identificados pelos arquitectos nos edifícios existentes, foram ou não integrados nas novas propostas. A par do estudo dos projectos, pretendeu-se entender as diferentes fases de execução e as dificuldades encontradas nas relações entre partes intervenientes. Nesse sentido, procurou-se ler de que maneira o contexto social político existente interferiu nesses processos. |
