Abstract

The choice of the architect on the materials to use in a project represents a crucial phase in the conception of a worksmanship. Each material diverges in its characteristics adapting itself in an individual way to the ideas of the architect opening an all complex wheel of different sensations which infuse in a space. The architecture reflects itself in a combination of sensations and ideas born from the options of the architect. This variability of options is the key point of metarmorfose design / built work.. All the materials currently used in the construction give reply to the requirements of the architect and the project itself. Timber is no exception! It is an organic material that represents comfort, stability and shelter since the early ages of mankind. The link between the Man and the wood is automatically natural and recomforting. In spite all these arguments in favour and the abundance of resources in Portugal, the wood does not offer competition to the most common materials of construction such as concrete, stone and steel. This material will be the subject of a further study, from a constructive point of view. Starting in the analysis of the origins and properties of the material, passing to the advantages and cons of its use in worksmanship, analyzing the way as it is introduced in the drawing of the construction, concluding in a theoretician-practical experience of comparison of construction materials. Why is the construction in wood scarce in Portugal? It is on this question that my thesis will lean over, looking exhaustingly to understand the potentiality of the wood to project architecture in our country.
