Cidade Romana de Tongóbriga. Contributos para a sua conservação e inteligibilidade.

Abstract

This essay aims to identify the specificity of the archaeological heritage and the consequent problems of intervention by building on ruin, while fragment of architecture of the past. Therefore it will be questioned the role of the architect and his discourse when interpreting the ruin and issues such as conservation and promotion of cultural heritage will be discussed. It will be considered that the memory component represents an essential function when practicing architecture and establishes a particular relationship with it since it constitutes a strong symbol of the action of time, evoking the past. On the other hand, this essay seeks to approach the project to its vision, understanding and interpreting the archaeological remains in its cultural context and social landscape, context that results from prolonged interaction in different societies, between man, nature and the physical environment. It also represents the evolutionary relationship testimonies of communities and individuals with their environment. As a summary of this analysis and as an attempt to address the issues raised, we intend to move forward with some chance of interpreting the residential area of the Roman city of Tongobriga, the main case study in this analysis. It requires that the theoretical consolidation results in the production of solutions that will look upon issues such as the scale of the domus and its shape, and type of coverage. Finally, we propose a hypothesis intervention. Thus, we will try to approach the project to its vision, understand and interpretate the archaeological remains, while discussing the issues related to it.
