Abstract

The current social and economic context demands for new values, models of consumption and spaces; as well as for the creation of instruments that allow for a sustainable regeneration of the urban landscape. This dissertation intends to highlight these major concerns, as well as study the role and contribution of art towards urban regeneration. How can art become a strategic instrument for an urban and social regeneration process? Drawing from the constant mutations that city spaces have suffered, whether social, cultural, economic, global; this study is underpinned by an approach of regeneration within the urban limits. It allows for a reflection on the concept of gentrification and of all the processes that constitute it, as well as exploring to what extend are those same processes influenced or promoted by art - whether the practice of art or an art object. This project also aims to introduce several reflexions, from a theoretical point of view, in a real and present context of a municipal project.
