Within the capitalist model of production, the installation of industrial engines is conditioned by the profit rate and this rate, in its turn, by the amortization rate of power costs. A decisive factor is the market expansion, which introduces a historic and apparendy aleatory problem. The conjugation of these conditions may determine technical irrationalities that, in the case of the Portuguese market, are manifest in the failure to adequately exploit its hydraulic and hydroelectric potential.pt_PT
