Abstract

The article offers a brief recollection of Manuel Gomes de Lima Bezerra’s actions pursuing the regeneration of medicine and surgery in Portugal in the 18th century, emphasizing one of the most important vectors of his enlightened «civic campaign»: the need for surgeons to be recognized by the State and to be –the more distinguished among them – generously paid.
