| Abstract: | The windows have a long history, full of small plots and controversies, not always peaceful, that allow us to identify certain times and describe the personality of each nation and building. Although apparently a window seems like a simple perforation on the wall that only allows the dialogue between two spheres inside / outside, the window can answer questions, that are at the same time, really simple and complex, creating a balance between function and shape, between something practical and symbolic. The exceptionality of this element, that strongly characterizes the identity of a building, compels us to reflect about the consequences its rehabilitation. After selecting the work of the architects Arménio Losa and Cassiano Barbosa, considering its importance in the Portuguese panorama and the value that these architects deposit on the details of their frames, the investigation process was based, unequivocally, on the need to create a historical background of the architects and their work, by collecting scattered data, and also in order to extend this historical framework to the concepts of window and frame, starting with an overview of the concepts and reaching a particular application on Arménio Losa and Cassiano Barbosa's work. From a practical view and considering the rehabilitation process of the buildings, we expect to attend, on one hand, the current needs, specifically issues related with cost, durability and quality of the product, and on the other hand, preserve the original language of the building, avoiding maladjusted operations that are found already in some cases. Since we are dealing with a controversial topic, subject of discussions and different positions, this dissertation aims to alert to the problem of rehabilitation when we are facing work with such an exceptional architectural value and, at the same time, create a database that can highlight the main themes related with frames rehabilitation, showing valid options in order to resolve the problem. |
| Description: | As janelas têm uma história longa e cheia de pequenos enredos e polémicas, nem sempre pacíficos, que permitem identificar determinadas épocas e atribuir uma personalidade própria a cada povo e a cada edifício. Apesar de aparentemente se tratar apenas de uma perfuração na parede para permitir o diálogo entre duas esferas interior / exterior, a janela responde a questões ao mesmo tempo muito simples e complexas, construindo um equilíbrio entre função e forma, entre algo prático e simbólico. A excecionalidade deste elemento, fortemente caracterizador da identidade de um edifício, obriga também à reflexão sobre as consequências que advém da sua reabilitação. Selecionada a obra dos arquitetos Arménio Losa e Cassiano Barbosa, tendo em conta a sua importância no panorama português e o valor que depositam na pormenorização das suas caixilharias, o processo de investigação prendeu-se, inequivocamente, por um lado à necessidade de criar um enquadramento histórico dos autores e da sua obra, através de uma recolha de dados que se encontram bastante dispersos, e por outro estender este enquadramento histórico aos próprios conceitos de janela e vão, partindo de uma visão geral dos mesmos para a sua aplicação particular na obra destes arquitetos portuenses. Numa vertente mais prática do problema, e pensando num processo de reabilitação dos seus edifícios procura-se responder, por um lado às necessidades atuais, nomeadamente às questões de custo, durabilidade e qualidade do produto e por outro manter a linguagem original, evitando assim operações desajustadas, já visíveis em alguns casos. Uma vez que nos encontramos perante um tema passível de discussão e que abraça posições dissonantes, a dissertação visa alertar consciências para a problemática da reabilitação em obras de tão excecional valor arquitetónico e cria uma base de conhecimento que permite elucidar os principais temas inerentes ao ato de reabilitar caixilharias, apresentando para tal opções válidas para a resolução do problema. |
