O cemitério na contemporaneidade. O sentido de requalificar.

Abstract

This Master Dissertation discusses the cemetery in the contemporary, namely in the sense of "requalifying" this equipment inserted in extensive urban space. The functional and emotional character of this kind of space, makes it an exclusive equipment. The cemetery, more than a site of deposition of bodies, is a place of worship and silence, which is intended to the deads and the living ones. «Just as death is the end of life, that gives it form and value that closes the circle, the silence is also the supreme end of language and consciousness. Everything that is said or written, all that is known, is to this, it truly: the silence»2. Therefore, there are noteworthy general questions on matters related with cemetery - the place of death, a space endowed with emotions and symbolism - that intends to make a framework, which allows us to contextualize the historical level, cultural and religious the transformations taken in this. Knowing the situation of the contemporary cemetery, it is proposed to recognize the influences of urban development in relation to cemeteries located in the municipality of Oporto, specially the relationship between the metropolis and necropolis. Testing out three cemeteries located in different urban contexts - Lordelo do Ouro, Agramonte and Prado do Repouso - considering its implantation, the urban network and urban dynamics, we sought to understand the meaning of "rehabilitation" of these spaces. It's not intended to reach a project of "rehabilitation", but to analyze and investigate this matter, in the point of view of an architect, on the issues of boundaries, like the cemetery wall (its importance in the definition of this equipment) and urban network that involves, as mobility has influenced how throughout its urban routes.
