| Abstract: | Whilst there are themes associated with Le Corbusier's work and architectural thinking which are widely discussed and analysed, the subject of his preference for the panoramic view remains, to a certain extent, under-explored. This dissertation aims to explore the question of horizontality in Le Corbusier's architecture, and is developed in three broad sections which reveal a progressive approach to the theme being studied. Firstly, there is an analysis of the principal ideas of his architecture, focusing on subjects like the five points of modern architecture or the duality of the architectural process. Secondly, this thesis considers the contentious fenêtre en longueur (strip window) and its role in the design of the modern dwelling and in the relationships between architecture-nature and house-city. Finally, there is a reflection on Le Corbusier's relationship with the classic tradition and, especially, with Mediterranean architecture which undoubtedly influenced the course of his career. In summary, this essay sets out to think about Le Corbusier's preference for the panoramic view, above any other, and seeks to reveal that this inclination extends to his whole architectural thinking and not solely to the use of the horizontal window. |
| Description: | Se há temas inerentes à obra de Le Corbusier e ao seu pensamento arquitectónico largamente discutidos e explorados, a problemática da sua predilecção pela visão panorâmica permanece, de certo modo, enigmática. Com o intuito de examinar a questão da horizontalidade na arquitectura de Le Corbusier, a presente dissertação desenvolve-se em três segmentos fundamentais que constituem uma aproximação progressiva ao tema em estudo. Em primeiro lugar, analisam-se as ideias principais da sua arquitectura, focando assuntos como os cinco pontos da arquitectura moderna ou a dualidade do processo arquitectónico. Em segundo lugar, aborda-se a controversa fenêtre en longueur (janela horizontal) e o seu papel no planeamento da habitação moderna e nas relações arquitectura-natureza e casa-cidade. Finalmente, procede-se à ponderação da relação de Le Corbusier com a tradição clássica e, especialmente, com a arquitectura mediterrânica que influenciou de forma notável o seu percurso. Esta reflexão pretende, assim, indagar sobre a preferência de Le Corbusier pela visão panorâmica, em detrimento de todas as outras, e esclarecer os meios pelos quais o arquitecto revela ao longo de toda a sua carreira essa inclinação, que não se reduz ao uso da janela horizontal mas abrange todo o seu pensamento arquitectónico. |
