A Escola Faria Guimarães no contexto do ensino industrial : (1885-1910)

Abstract

In the late 19th century the political authorities considered that the town of Oporto assembled most of the required conditions for the creation of an industrial school. A slow but regular demographic growth, the multiplication of small-sized industries, an increase in the demand for home deliveries and the geographical concentration of the working population established the necessity to create an industrial school in the parish of Bonfim, in order to educate and train a new generation of manufacturers and technicians. This is the context, which presided to the creation of the former Industrial School of Faria de Guimaraes, presently known as Soares dos Reis.
