Abstract

From man's will to take ownership of space, while casting, organizing and marking it, Architecture happens. On a set of boundaries and barriers, man defines spaces with distinct and peculiar identities, determining not only the inequality of circumstances but also promoting awareness for it. Those circumstances communicate with each other through their very own limit or border that parts them - but also connects - and determine the existence of an interior place relatively to an exterior one. These concepts, interior and exterior, are related to differentiated features and qualities. Comfort, intimacy and privacy are characteristics associated with the original idea of a shelter that man seeks as a way of delineating interior space and protecting himself from his context /surroundings. Thus, the way man treats the limit becomes decisive in the preservation of the values found in the interior of the housing / residence. Consequently this "limit" is the mediator between a specific reality, built by Architecture, and the whole universe that surrounds it. Decisive factors contribute to this tension of concepts and this thesis assumes, as a crucial point, the place where this relationship is established. This seems clear in the differentiation of the intensity of the relationship between interior and exterior. My interest in the study of this dichotomous relationship - where the "outside" and the "inside" diminish, merging and creating tensions that a tropical climate provides - comes from my last year in Brazil and my experience in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, where I lived in, and S. Paulo. Starting from a theoretical and multidisciplinary subject, first discussed in the context of the definition of limit, an analysis of the selected case studies will be made, taking into account its characteristics and singularities. The particular nature of these cases will allow a different perspective on this definition of limit between an interior, as dwelling, and an exterior, as surrounded by nature.
