Abstract

#is dissertation provides a re!ection on a project presented at the International Forum of the École Hôtelière de Lausanne. #is work was realized during an Exchange Programme year at Ponti!cia Universidad Católica de Chile: a di$erent university, culture and, above all, teaching environment from the "ve previous years in FAUP. #e exercise was carried out in limited time, without opportunity for indecision or extensive re!ection. Although most of the decisions were made in an intuitive and spontaneous manner, the resulting project is not without consciousness. Conversely, it can be understood that the project gains strength when rethought with proper references. #e theoretical aspect consists of the analysis of three matrices of composition that constitute the project: programmatic, landscape and formal. Each one has a corresponding match in the Visual Arts "eld: an action painting by Jackson Pollock, an abstractionist painting by Ângelo de Sousa and a suprematist painting by Kazimir Malevich. #e goal is to analyze the idea, the method, and the result; from a distinct point of view: an analysis that goes beyond the "eld of architecture to the limits of the project itself. In the context of the chosen references, the three matrices are analyzed in a framework built on the dichotomy between the Imagery Reference and Built Reference. #e Imagery Reference, from intuitive knowledge, is derived from literary constructions. #e Built Reference, from scienti"c knowledge, only has meaning as a theory of action. #e association and coordination of the di$erent views underlying the three matrices and references structure the work of the thesis.
