Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: Current Status and New Strategies Using Polymeric Materials
Experiments concerning peripheral nerve regeneration have been reported since the end of the 19(th) century. The need to implement an effective surgical procedure in terms of functional recovery has resulted in the appearance of several approaches to solve this problem. Nerve autograft was the first approach studied and is still considered the gold standard. Since autografts require donor harvesting, other strategies involving the use of natural materials have also been studied. Nevertheless,...
Time-dependent failure criteria for polymer matrix composites: a review
This article reviews several theoretical approaches for lifetime predictions proposed for polymer and polymer-based matrix composites. All these theories can be classified as global and homogenous approaches. Actually, regarding engineering applications, the global and homogeneous analyses are more convenient. Fracture mechanics, damage mechanics, and energy-based failure criteria are presented and illustrated with published experimental data.
A review of algorithms for medical image segmentation and their applications to the female pelvic cavity
This paper aims to make a review on the current segmentation algorithms used for medical images. Algorithms are classified according to their principal methodologies, namely the ones based on thresholds, the ones based on clustering techniques and the ones based on deformable models. The last type is focused on due to the intensive investigations into the deformable models that have been done in the last few decades. Typical algorithms of each type are discussed and the main ideas, applicatio...
