A construção da modernidade: Marques da Silva e o Porto do século XX

Abstract

The current paper intends to present some hypotheses for the reading of the work of Marques da Silva (1869- 1947), based on the projects of the Oporto Railway Station S. Bento (1896-1911) and the Building Block Conde de Vizela (1922-1923). It aims to give up special attention not only to the buildings themselves, but also to the relationships between them and with the entire work in which they operate as part of the cultural milieu in which they occurred. From this observation of buildings the (re)reading of the work of Marques da Silva is studied as a cosmopolitan and international intervention that took place in Porto, which at the beginning of the century must be treated as a modern work. This is an essential reading as part of the architectures of the opening of the twentieth century, because it is currently known, more deeply than it was conventionally accepted, that they will shape the different productions of twentieth century Portuguese architecture. These buildings will shape the very idea of modern.
