Title: Construir na ruína. A propósito da cidade romanizada de Conimbriga
Issue Date: 2009
Abstract: In this study we try to identify the particularities of the archaeological patrimony, meaning, the characteristics that seem to condition the architectonical intervention in this field, construir na ruína (the act of building in the ruin). The ruin is thus the object of an investigation centred in a specific historical period: roman architecture. In the first part of this work, the investigation is developed within four main questions of which relevancy and operability we try to test further on by analysing specific cases: what interest is there in studying the ruin, a fragment of past's architecture; what's the role of the architect in the process of finding and interpreting the ruin; what is the specificity of the archaeological patrimony, of the ruin; finally, how the architect's intervention in the ruin is characterized. In the second part of the work, the selected examples are analysed: Mérida, Sagunto and Conimbriga. In Mérida, we analyse the interventions in the Roman Theater; in the Municipal Forum Temple, later on reintegrated in the Los Corbos Palace with renascence characteristics; as well as the Mérida Roman Art Museum , projected by Rafael Moneo, which was build over existing roman remains. In Sagunto, we analyse the interventions in the Roman Theatre, which suffered successive mimetic reconstruction stages, until the rehabilitation operation promoted by Giorgio Grassi and Manuel Portaceli; the same architects who did a project for the Roman Forum, also analysed, with quite different objectives and results. At Conimbriga, we analyse the interventions made until the date, as well as the process that lead to the building and further extension of the monographic museum. Also at Conimbriga, the main case study, we tried to gather, systematize and analyse the documentation produced until then, advancing some possibilities of interpretation, expressed in drawing, for some sectors of the city and for some buildings. In the end we present a summary, an evocation of the provisional conclusions that were built during the investigation, confronting the different characteristics of the suited examples, according to the main themes and problems rose.
