In the early initiatives of European integration, came up the idea of a common Western European defence; the ultimate projection of this desideratum has been materialized in the frustrated attempt of establishing the European Defence Community. A long period followed, during which the defence of Western Europe was entrusted almost exclusively to Americans, although, as years went by, gradually came back to the Europeans the idea of a (more or less) independent satisfaction of their defence needs. The Treaty of Lisbon, in line with the failed Constitutional Treaty and in sequence of several initiatives which had taken place over the years, came to provide for the so-called common security and defence policy of the European Union.pt_PT
