This paper aims to provide an overview of the written documents by Russian naval officers that include references to the Portuguese Colonial Empire. The study focuses on the 19th century, since during this period Russian ships accomplished frequent and important circumnavigation trips, in order to reinforce economic ties with its colonies in North America, as well as with other countries. It is important to highlight that this paper is far from being exhaustive, as it only cites a small part of the descriptions of Continental Portugal, Brazil, Madeira, Cape Verde, Azores and Madeira, made by Russian travellers. In addition, restrictions as to the paper’s length obliged us to select some references and leave others out.pt_PT
