Épigraphie et héraldique au Portugal médiéval
In this essay we try to characterize the moment when the first manifestations of Heraldry appeared in the kingdom of Portugal, from the pioneering examples in the royal family (around 1187-1189), to its dissemination by different social groups (nobility, clergy, plebs, and municipalities). Chronological data seem to confirm that, despite heraldry having been an imported custom, Portugal quickly embraced it, a decade or two after it emerged in Europe.
