Title: Association between Sprinting, Vertical Jump, and Horizontal Jump abilities of Female Soccer Players
Issue Date: 2025-11-12
Abstract: Relevance: Sprinting, vertical jumping, and horizontal jumping play a significant role in the physical performance of football players. Football is an intermittent activity characterized by a high frequency of explosive movements. These motor abilities therefore become one of the main focuses when aiming to enhance game performance through training. Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between sprinting ability, vertical jump, and horizontal jump in female soccer players, seeking to understand how these physical performance variables are interconnected and contribute to athletic performance. Methods: Twenty-one (n = 21) adult female athletes (age: 16.52 ± 1.03 years; height: 1.64 ± 0.058 m; body mass: 58.0 ± 3.87 kg) participated in the study and were assessed in sprint tests (10 m and 30 m) as well as in vertical and horizontal jump tests. An exploratory analysis of the data was conducted, including the assessment of distribution normality using the Shapiro-Wilk test and the determination of correlations between variables through Pearson coefficients. Descriptive statistics (mean, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation) were used to provide a detailed characterization of the athletes' performance in the different tests. Results: The results showed that the sprint variables and horizontal jump tests followed a normal distribution, whereas the vertical jump variables did not present this pattern. Significant correlations were found between sprint performance and horizontal jump ability, suggesting that better horizontal jump results are associated with faster sprint times. In addition, consistent relationships were observed among the horizontal jump tests, indicating coherence between these measures. On the other hand, no significant associations were found between sprint performance and vertical jumps, nor between vertical and horizontal jump tests. Conclusions: In conclusion, the present study showed that horizontal jumping ability, rather than vertical explosive capacity, is closely related to sprint performance in young female soccer players. These results support the concept of movement specificity and suggest that the capacity to generate horizontal propulsion is a determining factor for sprint acceleration in this athletes.
