Reflexão Tectónica na Obra de Norman Foster + Partners

Abstract

The present research proposes a theoretical and practical reflection on the applicability of tectonic theory in contemporary architecture. Based on the premise that the built environment-particularly buildings-has overly prioritized aesthetic appeal, challenging construction engineering and neglecting other equally relevant architectural aspects, there is a noticeable departure from the holistic quality once advocated by the Vitruvian triad principles (utilitas, firmitas, and venustas).Initially, the study will present an introduction to the concept of tectonic theory, its evolution, and its current developments in the contemporary context. Subsequently, this perspective will be applied to an analysis of the work produced by the firm Foster + Partners, with emphasis on the tectonic autonomy of projects completed in the 21st century. The research questions to what extent the solutions developed by the architect and his collaborations can be considered valid examples of a tectonic methodology that integrates digital and sustainable approaches in contemporary practice. The main objective of this investigation is to uncover the intrinsic process of design and construction through a critical, reflective, and practical approach, grounded in an updated methodological systematization of tectonic theory. It seeks to evaluate the hypothesis of how tectonic theory can serve as a tool to enhance the quality of architectural objects and urban spaces, by validating an integrated professional practice that offers responses to current demands. These demands presumably seek solutions that incorporate sustainability in response to resource scarcity and the carbon crisis imposed by climate change; social equity and cultural anchoring through the creation of inclusive and adaptable spaces for diverse populations; urban resilience through the preservation and conservation of urban sites; integration of digital technologies and smart solutions in buildings and urban infrastructure, promoting more connected and functional cities; and the balance in creating a identity coherent with each context in the current century.
