| Abstract: | Sports performance in Rugby depends on a wide variety of variables, which influence the success of teams and identify the respective differences between them. In this way, the analysis of the game of Rugby becomes fundamental for the understanding of the existing variables and the influence that they have in the game. This whole process enables the search for the best possible performance as well as it helps the teams to succeed. From the set of variables found in the literature that have a direct influence on performance, this study seeks to find the relationship of the following: (i) set pieces (ii) ball possession (iii) success. To this end, this research uses a bibliographic review on the topics under study, a descriptive analysis and an analysis of significance. Using a database of games played at the Rugby World Cup in Japan, through a descriptive analysis of statistical data and through a cluster analysis with the intention of identifying which variables better separate and classify the rugby teams from each other, it was possible to conclude that: (i) the winning teams are more effective in dominating the set pieces when compared to the losing teams, (ii) the winning teams are more effective in conquering the ball in lineouts when compared to the losing teams, (iii) winning teams are more effective in contesting lineouts with an opposing throw when compared to losing teams (iv) losing teams have higher percentage of set pieces with their own ball, (v) the percentage of ball possession and stolen lineouts are statistically significant in differentiating teams when set pieces are used as a criteria, and finally, (vi) the variables (a) percentage of scrums, (b) percentage of lineouts and (c) points scored do not represent statistically significant differences in the differentiation of teams when using set pieces as criteria. |
| Description: | O rendimento desportivo no Rugby depende de uma ampla diversidade de variáveis, que influenciam o sucesso das equipas e identificam as respetivas diferenças entre as mesmas. Deste modo, a análise do jogo de Rugby torna-se fundamental para a compreensão das variáveis existentes e da influência que estas têm no jogo. Todo este processo possibilita a busca do melhor rendimento possível assim como auxilia o sucesso das equipas. Do conjunto das variáveis encontradas na literatura que têm influência direta no desempenho o presente trabalho realiza a busca da relação das seguintes: i) fases estáticas ii) posse de bola iii) sucesso. Para tal esta pesquisa recorre a uma revisão bibliográfica sobre os temas em estudo, uma análise descritiva e a uma análise de significância. Recorrendo a uma base de dados dos jogos disputados no Campeonato do Mundo (CM) de Rugby de 2019 no Japão, através da realização de uma análise descritiva de dados estatísticos e por intermédio de uma análise de clusters com a intenção de identificar quais as variáveis que melhor separam e classificam as equipas de rugby entre si foi possível concluir que: (i) as equipas vitoriosas são mais eficazes na conquista das fases estáticas quando comparadas com as equipas derrotas, (ii) as equipas vitoriosas são mais eficazes na conquista da bola no alinhamento quando comparadas com as equipas derrotadas, (iii) as equipas vitoriosas são mais eficazes na contestação de alinhamentos com introdução adversária quando comparadas com as equipas derrotadas, (iv) as equipas derrotadas têm uma maior percentagem de fases estáticas com introdução própria, (v) a percentagem de posse de bola e os alinhamentos roubados são estatisticamente significativos na diferenciação de equipas, tendo como critério as fases estáticas, e por fim, (vi) as variáveis percentagem de formações ordenadas, percentagem de alinhamentos e pontos marcados não apresentam diferenças estatisticamente significativas na diferenciação de equipas, tendo como critério as fases estáticas. |
