O lugar doméstico no limite: quatro experiências habitacionais em Trieste

Abstract

Housing in Europe has become a central topic of debate in the urban and architectural fields. The rapid growth of cities, combined with changes in lifestyles, has intensified a housing crisis characterized by an imbalance between high demand and limited supply, exposing a growing number of people to precarious housing conditions or the risk of homelessness. Given this scenario, it is essential not only to rethink the paradigms of contemporary living, but also to redesign them as flexible spaces, that can adapt to ongoing chances in family structures and social life. A building that does not respond to these changes and does not meet the needs of its inhabitants tends, over time, to lose its functionality, becoming obsolete, uninhabitable, and prone to abandonment. Moreover, real estate speculation and soaring rents makes access to housing increasingly difficult, exacerbating social inequalities and undermining a fundamental right: the right to a decent home. In this context, coliving emerges as a alternative capable of mitigating these problems, fostering sharing dynamics, a sense of community belonging, and social integration. Based on four pilot buildings located in the city of Trieste, Italy, this study proposes the reuse and enhancement of these structures by redesigning the domestic spaces through the implementation of coliving practices. This approach serves as a tool to experimentwith different strategies for appropriating and using the domestic sphere, creating programs that encourage interaction amongdiverse generations and social profiles.
