Un Orient à portée de main: réflexion à partir de quelques textes de voyage en espace ibérique

Abstract

This article aims to explore the Iberian Oriental imaginary in a few nineteenth-century French and Portuguese travel narratives, to help map out representations of Iberia as the 'Orient' in Europe. As French travels to Spain in the Romantic period took place well before the development of Portuguese cultural travel, the texts that emerged from them will serve as a framework for Portuguese travel writing, leading, on the one hand, to a process of glossing and, on the other, to the broader circulation and sedimentation of an entire imaginary of the Orient within Europe itself.
