Arquitetura e memória: Reabilitação de uma residência no centro histórico de Santiago do Cacém

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the rehabilitation of a rammed earth house located in the historic center of Santiago do Cacém. The work reflects on the challenges and potential of preserving earthen architecture within a contemporary urban context. Based on the historical, constructive, and material analysis of the building, the research seeks to understand the role of rammed earth as a traditional and sustainable technique. At the same time, this heritage is confronted with current demands for habitability, comfort, and energy efficiency. The research is structured into three complementary approaches. The first consists of a study of the case study's context, both from a historical-geographical and a constructive perspective. This is followed by the survey and diagnosis of the pre-existence, identifying the pathologies and vulnerabilities specific to earthen construction. Finally, a strategy of intervention is proposed, combining heritage valorization with the introduction of architectural solutions suited to contemporary needs. This dissertation thus aims to contribute to the critical reflection on the rehabilitation of rammed earth heritage in Portugal, highlighting its cultural and environmental relevance and encouraging its integration into the future of architectural practice.
