"Meias-Casas": Projeto de Reabilitação na Rua dos Pescadores, Caminha

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the study and design of a project for the rehabilitation of a group of three houses located on Rua Benemérito Joaquim Rosas, in the village of Caminha. The dissertation is structured in three parts. The first explores the historical and urban development of Caminha, with the aim of understanding the genesis of Meia- Casa. It covers the geographical context and historical moments that led to the creation of Rua dos Pescadores, as well as the factors that may have de-characterized it. It analyzes the social discrepancies between fishermen and other inhabitants of the town. It characterizes the types of housing in Caminha and fishing houses in other regions. Finally, it focuses on the half houses, outlining what characterizes them and the elements that qualify them, with the aim of understanding their matrix. The second part presents the case study. It describes the surroundings and the architectural features of the housing complex. It discusses the origin of the complex. It reports on the first visit to the complex and presents its survey. It checks whether the houses fall into the "half-house" typology. The intervention program is then described, outlining the project's goals. This section culminates in the identification of pathologies, challenges and opportunities for improvement, listing all the issues to be worked on and the initial obstacles inherent in rehabilitation.The third part is dedicated to presenting the final rehabilitation project developed for the three houses. It presents the process of designing the project. It presents the drawings of the final project. It describes the exterior volumetric changes, including modifications to the façades. It presents the detailed internal organization of the three houses. It describes the construction solutions adopted to solve the problems identified. Finally, it describes the meetings held with the relevant authorities to assess the feasibility of implementing the proposal. The methodology used combines historical research, interviews with local people and architectural analysis. The aim is to propose a rehabilitation that preserves the heritage identity and responds to contemporary housing needs, contributing to the revitalization of Rua Benemérito Joaquim Rosas.
