Da Paiva & Irmão à CIF: cento e trinta anos de história da Fundição

Abstract

The iron foundry in Foz do Sousa dates to the late nineteenth century. At that time, the area was predominantly agricultural, yet the region offered extensive scrubland (a source of timber), sandbanks (from which smelting material could be extracted), and proximity to the river Douro (which ensured accessibility to raw materials and labour, while its tributaries represented a potential source of energy). These conditions were crucial for industrial activity and determined the location of the foundry. Within this context, Paiva & Irmão was established in 1895, initially as a small family‑run workshop, which gradually expanded and specialized. After several administrative transformations, the Companhia Industrial de Fundição (CIF) was founded in 1931, fully incorporating its predecessor, and it has continued to operate on the same site up to the present day. Originally dedicated to the manufacture of agricultural machinery and three‑legged pots, production diversified throughout the twentieth century. Prominent figures of Porto's industrial sector were closely associated with the enterprise, shaping its trajectory. This article aims to provide a historical overview of this century‑old factory, introduce the individuals who played a central role in its foundation and development, and explore how their vision influenced productive choices over time.
