Devir(es) da Arquitetura. A Construção de Horizontes em Kiesler, Kahn e Ishigami

Abstract

Tackling the problems of today's world requires a shift in the way we see and build architecture. There is a constant need - in all fields - to actualize ways of seeing, of doing, of being. Relying on tradition without revision or on production without reflection binds us to the construction of a world that is incapable of answering our actual needs (and of inaugurating new ones). To resist this outcome, which may result from inaction or uninformed action, we propose the act of building new horizons. This metaphor is evoked throughout our dissertation as an image of our ultimate aspirations, which, like a horizon, are constantly being unravelled. If the horizon is the goal that pushes us to change, becoming is the actual act of changing. It is our way of moving closer to the horizon. To do this, we believe it is important to reflect on beginnings. In them, we find something that should be of the essence in the new ways. One could speak about vocation and infidelity, ancestrality and innovation, grounding and ascending. This dual movement is imperative in the construction of a primitive future - a future that remains faithful to the essence of architecture while promoting its expansion. The artistic practice is a testimony to this way of producing and, as some authors argue,1 it is our biggest instrument of resistance. We recognize that the architectures of Frederick Kiesler, Louis Kahn and Junya Ishigami embody these notions. As artists-architects they inaugurate poetic images2 that act as double becomings: of their expression and of our own being. We argue that transcendence - both disciplinary and ontological - is a quality that ought to be present in architecture, in order to expand the boundaries of the discipline and devote itself to something beyond mere objecthood.
