Entre o rio e a memória: Reabilitação do Palácio Conde de Sucena

Abstract

This dissertation investigates ways of reinterpreting built heritage in relation to the city and the river, based on the premise that its relationship with the natural and urban environment are fundamental elements of identity. The work focuses on the revivalist and eclectic architecture of the 19th century, with particular emphasis on the "casas de brasileiros" (Brazilian houses), with the Palácio Conde de Sucena - located in Borralha, Águeda - as the main case study. This building, which has been abandoned for several decades, is analyzed in terms of its heritage value, state of conservation, and potential for reintegration into urban life. At the same time, themes are explored that encompass knowledge of heritage as a structuring element of collective identity and urban memory. The morphological evolution of Águeda is also studied, marked by its close relationship with the river of the same name, whose presence has shaped the urban fabric and continues to influence life today, particularly through the recurring phenomenon of flooding, contributing to a perspective of adaptation to climate change. The methodology adopted was based on a cross-analysis of various types of studies on the physical and interpretative object: the author carried out metric, constructive, and photographic surveys of the building and property, as well as diagnoses of anomalies and alterations. Anonymous surveys and semi-structured interviews were also conducted with the local population, with the aim of assessing their level of knowledge about the heritage under study, their perception of its value, and their expectations for its future. The proposed intervention is based on the premise that heritage preservation should not be limited to physical intervention, but should also promote its functional and social reintegration. In this sense, the program proposed for Quinta Conde de Sucena combines cultural, educational, recreational, and community support uses in a model that encourages social appropriation and daily enjoyment. The approach incorporates constructive rehabilitation solutions compatible with the pre-existing structures and integrates "nature-based solutions" to improve water efficiency and the resilience of the space in the face of flooding. By articulating heritage preservation, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion, this work seeks to demonstrate that the rehabilitation of historical heritage can be both an instrument for safeguarding collective memory and a catalyst for urban regeneration. More than just restoring a building, the aim is to restore its active role in the life of the city, strengthening the links between past, present, and future, as well as between architecture, nature, and community.
