| Issue Date: | 2025-11-11 |
| Abstract: | This practicum report focuses on the theme "Profile of the Azorean Student: An Analysis of Physical Education in an Insular Context", aiming to understand how the insular setting, as well as the socio-cultural and economic reality of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, influences students' behaviour, participation, and physical fitness, both within the school environment and beyond. Based on a qualitative approach, and through direct observation, the application of the IPAQ questionnaire, and the analysis of FITescola test results, a comprehensive characterisation was developed for two classes from Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade Secondary School, located on Terceira Island. The work is grounded in a reflective and contextualised perspective, seeking to integrate the collected data with the pedagogical experience developed throughout the practicum. It also analyses factors such as the influence of rural childhood, regional cultural habits, and the specific challenges that insularity poses to education and the promotion of physical activity. The results indicate generally satisfactory levels of physical fitness but also highlight the need for more differentiated pedagogical interventions in secondary education, in order to counter the tendency for declining engagement in sports practice as age increases. This report aims to contribute to a broader understanding of the Azorean student as a situated learner, emphasising the importance of pedagogical practices adapted to local realities, while promoting a more inclusive, conscious, and effective Physical Education. |
