Do Método às Estratégias. Intervir no Património Habitacional Vernacular de Vila Nova de Foz Côa

Abstract

The present dissertation is built upon the relationship between vernacular housing heritage and the identity of the territory. It focuses on Vila Nova de Foz Côa, more precisely on its medieval core, where, through the analysis of a rehabilitation project entitled Metodologias e Práticas de Intervenção na Arquitetura Vernacular, five dwellings are taken as a starting point to reflect on the ways of intervening in this heritage. In a context marked by population ageing, scarcity of accessible housing in adequate conditions, and degradation of a vast stock of vacant dwellings, this research seeks to understand how the recovery of such constructions can constitute a resource for urban regeneration as well as for cultural and identity valorisation. At the same time, it reflects the will to promote an improvement in the quality of life of the population, ensuring dignified housing conditions that meet contemporary demands. By confronting theory with the concrete reality of design practice, as well as with the historical, territorial, and regulatory framework, the dissertation analyses intervention strategies that reconcile the safeguarding of vernacular housing heritage with current needs of habitability and comfort. The comparative study of the cases makes it possible to identify strategies, patterns, and best practices, as well as to understand the constraints, decisions, and responses to specific problems of intervention, contributing to the construction of guiding principles for future practices. Thus, this dissertation asserts itself as a critical, reflective, and methodological exercise, grounded in the observation of design practice in a real context.
