A Casa de Azurém de Noé Diniz, uma releitura contemporânea

Abstract

This Dissertation develops from the study of Casa de Azurém, designed by the Architect Noé Diniz between 1967 and 1968 in Guimarães, with the aim of defining a restoration project methodology for it. The research begins with a detailed analysis of the house, from its commission to its current state, situating it within the historical, architectural and cultural context of the second half of the 20th century. The House is observed as a manifestation of portuguese modern domestic architecture, revealing a balance between constructive rationality, sensitivity to place and functional adequacy. The study, listing and analysis of Noé Diniz's work soon proved as necessary and inevitable. Although a broader analysis of the architect's work was preferred, the study was limited to his early professional years, corresponding to the period in which Casa de Azurém was designed and built. Abstract The close and regular contact with the Architect Noé Diniz throughout the research process enriched the work through the direct sharing of testimonies, drawings and reflections. One of the conversations held with the Architect is transcribed in full in this dissertation, offering a direct contribution to the understanding of both the work and its author. The development of the study, in parallel with the research on the conservation and restoration of modern architecture, led to the formulation of a restoration project methodology for Casa de Azurém. This methodology is grounded in the diagnosis of its current condition, the changes it has undergone over time, and its relationship with the surrounding context. The proposed intervention seeks to preserve the architectural identity of the house while adapting it to the contemporary ways of living.
