Casa das Oliveiras. Um projeto de Reabilitação em Marco de Canaveses

Abstract

The following thesis focuses on the theme of the ruin through a practical case study: the development of a rehabilitation project for an old popular house from the 18th century, currently in ruins, named Casa das Oliveiras by my father. Located in the parish of Tuías, in Marco de Canaveses, the terrain in which it stands was acquired with the aim of creating a second refuge between the Casa de Ambrães to the north - currently inhabited mainly during the warmer seasons - and the vineyard to the south, both belonging to my family. In this way, the house is intended to serve as a new shelter for the growing family or for rural tourism. It will also support the surrounding agricultural areas, which the first house cannot directly access due to its remoteness and the difficulty of the terrain. The aim of this practical exercise is to assess the heritage that will one day be inherited, in light of the expected standards of comfort adapted to a contemporany programme, while preserving and enhancing its original features. For this purpose, the necessary theoretical foundations were established to support the specific questions inherent to an intervention of this nature, in order to maximise the qualities that this region has to offer. Local cartography was consulted, and the wishes of the client - my family - were taken into consideration and carefully weighed, never overlapping with my own vision. This way, the project began with a rigorous survey of the building, alongside a geographical and temporal analysis of the site in which it is located, as well as a study of heritage restoration practices since the 15th century, to better inform and guide the constructive choices.
